Winter Hokey Pokey

Use this activity to talk about clothing that’s worn during winter. Get your class to brainstorm all kinds of winter clothing ideas and then incorporate them into the song.

The Winter Pokey (to the tune of “The Hokey-Pokey”)

  • You put your right mitten in,
  • You take your right mitten out.
  • You put your right mitten in,
  • And you shake it all about.
  • You do the winter pokey, [shiver]
  • And you turn yourself around.
  • That’s what it’s all about!
  • You put your left mitten in….
  • You put your right boot….
  • You put your left boot….
  • You put your long scarf in….
  • You put your warm cap in….
  • You put your snowsuit in….

Gang of Rhythmn by Walk off the Earth

Song Artist: Walk off the Earth

This song is performed by, “Walk off the Earth”.  This band has a unique and fresh style. The energy that comes from their songs, especially this one, is enough to make most people jump up and sing and dance! Enjoy.

The song’s message is about being happy and freeing your mind to enjoy. Living life and being happy with what you have including the people you are with. This is demonstrated from the very first verse, which describes an old guitar with rusty strings.  Normally a first impression would be that the guitar is no good because it is old and rusty. Then he describes that it is ‘all i need’.

There’s no worries on the earth tonight” – this represents a feeling of freedom, escape from the things that normally would burden you. Stress, money problems, worrying about learning English, :)

Once you get on this ‘train‘ (locomotive is the engine that drive, moves a train. “We’re like a locomotive” means that once you get started on this path, you will be unstoppable and others will join.

Lyrics

I got this old guitar
The strings are rusty
But it’s all I need
Bring in the kick drum
It can back the beat
Let’s gather ’round and sing a song
I got a shaker too
The kind of sound
That wants to make you move
Bring in the uke
We’ll complete the groove
Let’s gather round and sing a song

There’s no worries on the earth tonight
We’re all walkin’ off the world tonight

Come on now everybody
Come on now everyone
We’re like a locomotive
Under the big hot sun
We’re chained to the gang of rhythm
The song is never done
Come on now everybody
Come on now everyone
Come on everyone

We got this melody
Bring in the harmonies like CSNY
To write a tune you know will never die
Let’s gather round and sing a song

There’s no worries on the Earth tonight
We’re all walkin’ off the world tonight

Come on now everybody
Come on now everyone
We’re like a locomotive
Under the big hot sun
We’re chained to the gang of rhythm
The song is never done
Come on now everybody
Come on now everyone
Come on everyone

And when the night is done
These chains will hold us strong
The chords will carry on
Long after we’re gone oh oh

There’s no worries on the earth tonight
We’re all walkin’ off the world tonight

Come on now everyone yeah
Come now everyone
We’re like like a locomotive
Under the big hot sun

Come on now everybody
Come on now everyone
We’re like a locomotive
Under the big hot sun
We’re chained to the gang of rhythm
The song is never done
Come on now everybody
Come on now everyone
Come on everyone

We got this melody
Come on everyone
Bring in the harmony
Come on everyone

I got this old guitar
The strings are rusty
But it’s all I need…

This is an amazing song, covered by an amazing band.

Song Name: Royals
Song Artist: Lorde

This song is being performed by a band called, “Walk off the Earth”. I chose to use this video for this lesson because of the creative way in which it is performed. I think you will all like it as much as i do.

  • A “Royal“, which is this song’s title, refers to a member of the Royal Family. The song’s artists, Lorde, is a New Zealander, which is a member of the British Commonwealth, so we can assume that she is referring to the British Royal Family.

This is a very interesting song which begins with the singer describing how she/he has not had a privileged life (as would a “Royal”). For example, she had never seen a “diamond in the flesh”. She’s not “proud of her address”, and is not envied for her ‘postcode” (a postcode is also known as a postal code (Canada), zip-code (USA) and other similar phrases which is how your neighborhood is identified by the mail delivery service. Your “postcode” represents your home, where you live.

The second verse has the singer describing a lavish way of living, such as would a Royal perhaps. Reckless, waste, no regard for others. Although the singer doesn’t really live like that, their expression and attitude has the freedom to imagine as if she/he did. Although its not true, “we don’t care, we’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams.

ESL Phrases:

  • We crave a different kind of buzz.

A “buzz” is a feeling that a person experiences from excitement. When people do something that excites them, the feeling, usually a feeling that they like, is described as a ‘Buzz”.

  • … we’ve cracked the code

To Crack a Code, means to figure something out. In the fourth verse when the singer says this, she is saying, that she and her friends have figured out the way, or the trick, to doing something and is likely referring to living the fantasy, and accepting, as the song suggests, that she is not and never will be Royal. The whole point of the song is that, hey, we don’t care, we are happy with who we are and in our own minds we are all we need to be. We don’t need to be something we cannot be.

Lyrics

I’ve never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I’m not proud of my address,
In a torn-up town, no postcode envy

But every song’s like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin’ in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin’ the hotel room,
We don’t care, we’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody’s like Cristal*, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair.

And we’ll never be royals (royals).
It don’t run in our blood,
That kind of luck’s just ain’t for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

[Verse 2]
My friends and I—we’ve cracked the code.
We count our dollars on the train to the party.
And everyone who knows us knows that we’re fine with this,
We didn’t come for money.

But every song’s like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin’ in the bathroom.
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin’ the hotel room,
We don’t care, we’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody’s like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair

And we’ll never be royals (royals).
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of luck’s just ain’t for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

Ooh ooh oh
We’re bigger than we ever dreamed,
And I’m in love with being queen.
Ooh ooh oh
Life is great without a care
We aren’t caught up in your love affair.

And we’ll never be royals (royals).
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of luck’s just ain’t for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.
