Reflective Writing in English

Reflective writing is an easy and wonderful, not to mention creative way to learn English. It is an introspective view or inner look of oneself, a recounting or recall of past or recent events or anything that comes to mind in a story form or a narrative. It is an easy enough practice because there is nothing to be made up. Everything needed is already present in the mind including phrases already learned. The work can be several pages long or just a few paragraphs.

The richness of the English vocabulary makes it easy to do reflective writing in English. The phrasing can be simple English reflective writing or for the well versed, ESL reflective writing (English as Second language). In reflective writing, there are no specific requirements or rules. Just write what comes to mind related to the topic the instructor has given.

For those self-studying English or if the instructor has not given any specific topic, topics related to reflective writing include:

  • The day’s past events
  • How the day started and what was different
  • A lament about rush hour traffic
  • The dismal, uneventful meeting
  • What I want to eat and why
  • Should I have helped push that man’s car
  • And many more…

A successful piece of reflective writing should include a description of the topic and the writer’s personal feelings, reflection or opinion of the matter.
