Go Abroad / Travel / Study Abroad

This is a phrase used by many students for a couple of reasons. First, many students have been abroad for travel or study and also because many students plan to go abroad to study English or other subjects. With such a high interest in studying abroad, it is a wonder that so many students still make errors when speaking about it. This 5 minute lesson will teach you how to talk about studying abroad. Many learners make the mistake of inserting ‘to’ before ‘abroad’ in all of these phrases.

Incorrect: I went to abroad last summer.
Correct: I went abroad last summer.

Dialogue 1
A: I remember you saying that you’re going to go abroad this summer. How is it working out?
B: Well, I’ve changed my plans. I might go abroad next year because I’ve been tied up* at work lately.
C: Sounds great.

*tied up = very busy. You can remember this by thinking of being so busy, the work is physically tying you up so you can’t do anything other than the work.

Dialogue 2
Q: Have you ever been abroad?
A: Yes, I have. I went to Santiago, Chile. It was very beautiful.
Or No, I haven’t, but I really want to go to Brazil. I heard it’s very fun and beautiful.
