Announcing Love - A Kids ESL Activity for Valentines

Valentine’s Day is once again approaching. It is the great time for everyone to show how much they love their loved ones. Adults have no problem buying presents for each other but kids can better express themselves by using their imaginations and create beautiful valentines crafts for their loved ones.

There are plenty of valentines crafts for kids to choose from. Most common are valentine cards in their many forms, painted valentine mugs and favorite pictures framed in valentine frames. Kids do not mince words and are not conservative about words either. Instead of valentine cards kids can say more by making a valentine scroll.

The main materials for a valentine scroll would be:

  • Roll of canvas or construction paper
  • Kid Safe Paints (red, green, silver or gold) (make sure it is safe for Children to use)
  • Cotton balls or sponge
  • Paint brush or felt marker (make sure it is safe for Children to use)
  • Red ribbon

First, cut the canvas or paper to the desired size. Next, the children can either paint (NOTE - use finger paints, or other paints which are safe for kids to use - DO NOTE USE OIL BASED PAILTS ON SKIN) a red flower, a heart or simply brush the paint on their hands and stamp the hand on the paper for a very personal ‘touch’. Next paint simple stems and leaves on the flower. A wide space should be left available for the message. Then the children can write a simple ‘I Love You’ or a nice short or long message using the paint brush or a marker. Next, use a sponge or a cotton ball to dab on some gold or silver paint and dab it on the edges of the paper or canvas. Let the masterpiece dry out so it can be rolled afterwards. Finally, tie a ribbon around the scroll so it can be presented to the lucky recipient.
