Love Runes - A unique valentines gift

There’s no need to mention that Valentine’s day is the perfect day for kids to express their love to friends or family. A great way for kids to do this is through valentines crafts. There are many kinds of crafts for kids to choose from like valentine cards, valentine mugs, dolls or valentine picture frames but since Valentines is such a special day, it would be great if the valentines craft were unique. When teaching kids valentines crafts, you can incorporate valentines vocabulary into you lesson to make a wonderful, fun and successful kids ESL lesson.

Unique valentines crafts don’t have to be difficult. In fact, they can be very easy, pretty and fun to make. A perfect example of a pretty and unique craft would be small, painted valentine stones. They are colorful stones with designs or messages. Once finished they can also be great as paperweights, fridge magnets or even jewelry.

To make painted valentine stones, you need:

  • Smooth, polished stones from your surroundings or sold from craft houses. Preferably triangle or heart shaped. Circles are good too.
  • Glitter glue (make sure it is safe for children to use – ask at your craft store)
  • Paint or paint markers (make sure it is safe for children to use – ask at your craft store)
  • Stronger craft glue (make sure it is safe for children to use – ask at your craft store)

To start, choose a nicely shaped stone. Next, paint the stone all over using paint or a paint marker. Red or white would be great. After it dries, use another paint pen of a different color to write the message like ‘Be Mine’ or ‘I Love You’ or draw a design like a heart or flower. For a prettier, shinier stone, add some glitter glue designs. Let the kids get creative with the Valentines vocabulary, they will have more fun that way.
